Introduction

Christopher Boltz

David Stears and Chris Boltz have many years between them of creating productions and bringing them to an audience -- David as a producer and director, and Chris as a designer, technician and sometimes stage manager.

Course Description

This course covers the behind the scenes process of taking a show from idea to performance from a back stage technical perspective. We will do this in 2 ways: In lecture we will discuss the process and you will create the documentation for a theoretical show; In lab, we will work together as the crew for a theatre department production.

What to Expect in this Course

Each week there will be reading in Canvas (no text book), and work on your theoretical project. You'll post your work for the theoretical project to a Canvas discussion board and provide peer feedback on our classmates work. I hope you will discover that there are many different ways to deal with the same challenges. All of these weekly assignments (after some revisions) will become part of your end of term project for lecture. There is also a short quiz as part of the lecture portion of the class. In the lab portion we will work together as the crew of a department production. You will be graded on your professional behavior on the crew. You will also have a brief self assessment of your performance.

Types of Assessments

There is one quiz, several online discussion boards, a semester project, and your crew assignment (with self-assessment).

Textbook Information / Link to ZTC Textbook

Your weekly readings are embedded in Canvas and consist of text, images, and some videos. The script that will form the basis of your theoretical project is also in Canvas, so there are no textbooks to buy for this class.

Other Relevant Course Information

You will be successful in this class if you participate. Lectures are more of a discussion and some time to collaborate with classmates than a traditional lecture. We will also practice some skills that we read about (or watched videos about) before class. Lab is an exciting time working as a class with the students in the production to make the show happen before a live audience.
